Preventing Rust And Corrosion: Three Tips For A Rust-Free Fence

No matter what kind of fencing we have, whether it be around our homes or workplaces, we want to get the most out of our purchase. Making sure that the fence we installed stays strong and sturdy for as long as possible. One of the most important aspects of keeping your fencing well-maintained is making sure that rust does not develop. Once this happens it can begin to compromise the structural integrity of the fence. While almost all metal fencing will have a rust-prevention coating, time and weather conditions will wear away this coating, and rust may begin to develop. There are, however, several things you can do to help prevent the coating from decaying. As well as keeping the fence from corroding once it does. Here are three tips for how to keep your fencing rust-free.

Choose a Superior Coating

Probably the best way to prevent precipitation from destroying the coating on your fence is to ensure that you buy high-quality fencing in the first place. While fencing with less durable coating is initially cheaper, the result will inevitably be that the fence does not last as long. Not to mention will be more prone to rust and weather damage. This is especially the case in areas that receive a lot of rainfall, as water is the number one cause of metal corrosion.

Clean Your Fence

While this may seem like a strange practice to some, intermittent cleaning of your fencing can do a lot in the way of preventing corrosion. While it may seem counterintuitive to use water as a means of preventing rust buildup, the removal of dirt is vital to keeping your fence well maintained. At least a few times a year, you should wash your fence with warms water and soap. Being sure to get any areas that have noticeable dirt buildup. Once the fence has been washed, it’s important that you dry it off. This will keep the water from causing the rust that you are working to prevent.

Scrape and Recoat

If, after all your efforts, your fence does develop rust. As it likely will given enough time, it’s vital that you remove the rust and recoat that area. Removing rust is best done when it first begins to develop. It will only get more difficult to scrape off the longer you allow it to sit. Use sandpaper or similarly course materials to rub away the rusted areas, and then recoat them rust preventing primer.

We all want to get the most for our money. And when it comes to fencing that means we have to be willing to do a little bit of work to maintain the metal. If you are willing to invest in the highest quality materials, maintenance can be minimal. There are, however, still going to be times when some maintenance is necessary.
