Turnstile Installation - Australian Security Fencing

Why Is A Turnstile Sometimes Called A Baffle-Gate?

When discussing security fencing, it’s easy to get lost in the amount of terminology that exists. There are a large number of options when it comes to selecting fences, gates and bollards. It’s important to do your research in order to make the best selection for your business. When investigating gates, you may come across the terms “turnstile” and “baffle-gate”. These are interchangeable and refer to the same, rotating gate used to aid traffic flow.

Here are some common questions we get asked – What are turnstiles, where are turnstiles used, and what are the benefits?

What is a turnstile?

A turnstile or baffle-gate is a rotating gate that assists pedestrian traffic flow by allowing one person to pass at a time. They often use a ratchet mechanism to ensure the stile moves in one direction only. This helps to maintain a smooth flow of traffic. They can also be customised to restrict access by only rotating after payment has been made by inserting a coin, ticket or pass.

Where are turnstiles used?

Turnstiles are used for a variety of purposes at a number of different locations. Busy train stations will often use them to control the direction and momentum of pedestrian traffic. They’re also designed to ensure payment is made before entry and/or exit.

They’re commonly used in stadiums, amusement parks, and airports. You will typically see them in areas where controlling the movement of large numbers of people is a priority. They can be customised to report on how many people pass through; a helpful tool for ticketed events. Turnstiles can also control access into restricted areas. Limiting entry to those who hold a pass and providing an accurate report of who has entered and exited the building or area. This is particularly useful in offices, lobbies, or high-security areas.

What are the different types of turnstiles?

There are several different types of turnstiles to choose from. Choosing the most appropriate one for you depends on the needs of your business.

A full-height turnstile is a high-security option. Unlike lower-set turnstiles, these turnstiles keep unauthorised personnel from jumping over or bypassing them. This is a great option if you’re particularly concerned about security in your business.

Optical turnstiles sit around hip-height. They are a sleeker option that’s popular within office buildings, train stations and stadiums. When designing your security gates and fencing, it’s also worth looking at including wide aisle turnstiles, which provide access for people in wheelchairs, scooters.
