Australian Security Fencing
Australian Security Fencing (ASF) has manufactured and supplied 2.8 kilometres of security fencing to Kayedar Services for installation at Karnet and Wooroloo Prisons in Western Australia. The 3.6 metre high perimeter fence and associated security systems are designed to improve community safety by improving the way prisoners are monitored. The fence, with its associated equipment, will also create a safer work environment for staff and a safer living environment for prisoners.
The nature of the project required a fencing product that was secure, tough and durable. Both fences are being installed as part of the WA Government’s commitment to improving community safety, so the chosen product had to deter prisoners from escaping and also delay planned escape attempts. The fence had to be see-through and blend in with the natural environment. At 3.6 metres high, the fence is almost two metres higher than most security fences.
According to Australian Security Fencing Product Manager, David Odell, Fencing Contractor Kayedar Services chose ASF’s Securemax® product after weighing up all the advantages of the product. “The fence obviously had to be difficult to penetrate with normal cutting tools. We manufacture Securemax® from OneSteel’s Australian made “Zalcote® wire that has strong tensile properties that increase the resistance against penetration. “Our European designed and Australian made Securemax® product also has a particularly small aperture (9mm x71mm) that makes it difficult to grip and therefore climb. “ Australian Security Fencing usually manufactures Securemax® in sheets ranging in height from 2.4 to 3 metres, in this case, it was able to meet the 3.6 metre high requirements of the project. In all 1200 Securemax® sheets were manufactured by ASF and transported from Sydney to Perth.
The fences will be installed over the next 12 months and will include a detection system, lights, cameras and gates. The mesh is also see-through to maximise security while minimising its impact on the environment. According to David Odell, Securemax® is long lasting, ensuring it meets the customers requirements in all regards. “The zinc aluminium alloy coatings of the Zalcote® wire offer excellent protection, combining the benefits of the active cathodic protection of zinc with the passive protection of aluminium. The result is a coating that offers two to four times greater protection than hot-dipped galvanised wire. “Securemax® is a leader in security fence, that it’s the product of choice at two prisons is testament to its capabilities,” said David.
